Lovely Lei - Recipe by Jill Slater
Lovely Lei

Materials:

  • 25 red standard carnations
  • 1 yard kite string
  • Very large-eyed needle (the kite string needs to be threaded through the needle, available at craft stores)
  • One half yard decorative red ribbon, 2-inches wide
  • One half yard decorative red ribbon, 1/8-inch wide
  • Floral clippers and scissors
Directions:
Step 1 - Cut the string to approximately 36-inches in length.

Step 2 - Cut the stems off the carnations.

Step 3 - Leave about 4-inches of 'empty' string at each, so that the string ends can be tied together.

All the carnations are threaded onto the string sideways; through the calyx of the flower (the green part of the flower just under the bloom and that holds all the flower petals).

The carnations end up on top of eachother and need to be turned front, side, back and side again. This way the blooms of the flowers show all the way around.

Step 4 - When all the carnations are used up, tie the two ends together.

Step 5 - With the 2-inch wide red decorative ribbon, tie a bow like you would tie your shoe. Attached the bow to the lei with the narrow red ribbon.
